Hello!

Names, countries, friends — and the verb that carries all of English: to be. In this chapter you meet Daniel. It is his first day at a new school. It is your first day too. Welcome!

Teacher · Block 1 Week 1 of 26. All four can-dos map to Movers Speaking Part 4 (unit B15, opens this week alongside B16 numbers and B17 alphabet). Anticipate: learners can often already say "hello"; the new ground is the full-sentence answer.

Teacher · Block 3 Portuguese interference to expect and correct warmly: (1) dropped pronoun — “Is teacher” for “She is the teacher” (PT allows null subjects; English does not); (2) “I have ten years” for “I am ten” (ter → to be with ages); (3) “I am agree” does not appear yet but starts here if to be is taught as a translation of both ser and estar — present it as one verb with three forms, not two verbs. Sounds corner — the sound of H

In English, H blows air! Put your hand in front of your mouth and feel it: hello · hi · how · happy · Miss Hill.

All 14 items are Movers-list (Starters recycled where marked in R1). Teach the collocation, never the bare word — the one-by-one reveal is the retrieval loop: cards open in order only, the learner says the word before opening, then "Turn all back" and run the loop again at the end of the block. Pronunciation watch-list for PT-BR speakers: initial /h/ in “hello” (not silent), final /tʃ/ absent in “nice”, word stress in TEACH-er.

The New Boy

Every word in this story is Chapter 1 language. Read it once with your eyes only. Then do the two tasks.

¶1Daniel is a boy. He is ten years old. Today is his first day at Park School, and Park School is big! Daniel is the new boy, and he is not happy. “Hello,” he says at the school door. “My name is Daniel.” But his voice is small.

¶2A girl is at the door. She is small, and her school bag is red. “Hi! I'm Amy. What's your name?” she says. “I'm Daniel. I'm from Brazil,” he says. “Brazil! Wow!” says Amy. “Nice to meet you, Daniel!” Now his voice is not small.

¶3Amy and Daniel are in the classroom now. The teacher is at the big desk. She is Miss Hill. “Good morning, class!” says Miss Hill. “Good morning, Miss Hill!” they say. “Class, this is Daniel. He is new. Welcome to Park School, Daniel!”

¶4A boy is at the next desk. He is tall, and his pencil case is green. “Hello! I'm Sam. How are you?” he says. “I'm fine, thank you,” says Daniel. Amy says, “Sam is my friend. And now he is your friend too!”

¶5“How old are you, Daniel?” says Sam. “I'm ten. And you?” “We are ten too!” says Sam. “And Miss Hill?” says Daniel. “Is she ten?” Amy and Sam laugh. “No! She isn't ten! She is the teacher!”

¶6It is three o'clock. School is not open now. “Goodbye, Amy! Goodbye, Sam!” says Daniel. “See you tomorrow!” They are his friends now. Park School is big, but it is not scary. Daniel is the new boy — and he is happy.
